Today we celebrate the centenary of José Saramago’s birth.
The student Diogo Carvalho (grade 12 A) participated in the Centenary Readings that took place in several schools in the country in partnership with the José Saramago Foundation and the National Reading Plan. Diogo read the last “chapter” of Memorial do Convento (in English “Baltasar and Blimunda”).
“Once upon a time there was a one-handed soldier and a woman who had special power.” – no wonder this novel represents Portugal on the literary world map! This is the true romance that encompasses all of humanity, all its infamy, but also all its glory. We say “Baltasar Seven-Suns” and “Blimunda Seven-Moons” and in these words, we find our smallness and our greatness, and we find the best example of what it is to define Love.
